Steep decline in leather exports from Bangladesh in July

Bangladesh’s total leather exports in July were worth $91.16 million, a fall in value of 21.7% compared to the same month of 2017, according to data from the country’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).

Exports of finished leather fell 24.3% to $10.8 million, while exports of leather products tumbled 61.5% to $14.84 million.

On a more positive note, leather footwear exports were valued at $66.24 million, up 2.5% compared to July 2017.

For the current financial year, of which July was the first month, Bangladesh has set the leather sector an export target of just over $1.11 billion. This would require growth of around 3.5% compared to the $1.08 billion achieved for the 2017-18 year.
