Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment paid courtesy visit to LFMEAB

Mr. Mikail Shipar, Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, People’s Republic of Bangladesh paid a courtesy visit to Leathergoods And Footwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association of Bangladesh (LFMEAB) on Saturday, 27th May 2017. President of LFMEAB Mr. Md. Saiful Islam welcomed Secretary to LFMEAB. Officials of Ministry of Labour and Employment and LFMEAB board members were present among others.
During the visit LFMEAB Compliance Unit presented an overview of LFMEAB’s major compliance initiatives such as customized Corrective Action Plan (CAPs) to improve factory’s compliance provisions, compliance training regarding work place productivity, environmental law and practices, ongoing factory improvement program and recently introduced health and medical insurance for LFMEAB member factories.
After presentation, President highlighted beyond compliance initiatives of LFMEEAB such as planned fair price shop, community school initiative, private firefighting station in industrial belt of LFMEAB member factories, and health scanning porgrammes- eye sight and TB screening. Furthermore, he urged Ministry of Labour and Employment to approve/recognize assessment and auditing of LFMEAB Compliance Unit. Secretary assured to recognize activities of LFMEAB Compliance Unit and suggested LFMEAB to enhance competency and technical know-how. President also urged Secretary to recommend Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence to approve firefighting drilling of Centre of Excellence for leather Skill Bangladesh Ltd (COEL). In addition, LFMEAB President requested Secretary to visit LFMEAB member factories to gauge worker’s satisfaction and dissatisfaction and to provide subsequent directives to LFMEAB.
Later on Secretary marked LFMEAB as success story regarding compliance, labor issues and purpose-made buildings, and etc. He opined for possible collaboration agreement with LFMEAB regarding gender sensitivity training for mid-level management of LFMEAB factories. Finally Secretary requested LFMEAB to come forward regarding Central Fund (designed) for the welfare of workers in 100% export oriented industry as a forward looking initiative.
